Nearly 90% of adults over 65 say they want to stay in their own home as they age. But most homes weren't built for the way bodies change over time. Steps that were never a problem become a barrier. Bathrooms that felt fine at 50 become dangerous at 75. ClearStep Home Safety helps families in the Grand Rapids area make the targeted, practical changes that let people stay home — safely, independently, and without the expense and trauma of moving to a facility before it's truly necessary.

Aging in place means continuing to live in your own home safely and independently as you get older, rather than moving to an assisted living facility or nursing home. It usually requires making modifications to the home to accommodate changing physical abilities.
The most impactful modifications are typically: grab bars in the bathroom (where most falls happen), stairlift installation (to restore access to all floors), entry ramp or threshold modification (to eliminate step barriers), improved lighting (especially in hallways and stairways at night), and non-slip flooring in wet areas. A home safety evaluation identifies which of these are most urgent for your specific home.
Signs to look for include: towel bars or furniture being used as grab bars, handrails that wobble, high-gloss or loose flooring, poor lighting at night, difficulty getting in/out of the tub, or stairs that are being avoided. Our free home safety evaluation provides a systematic, room-by-room assessment.
The evaluation is free, with no obligation. You receive a written report with prioritized recommendations. Each modification is quoted separately.
Original Medicare does not cover home safety modifications. Some Medicare Advantage plans and Medicaid waiver programs may provide partial coverage. We help clients understand their options during the evaluation.
