And sometimes nothing has happened yet — an adult child notices a parent gripping furniture to get across a room, or a homeowner realizes the stairs have started to feel harder than they used to.
Whatever prompts the call, the goal of the home fall risk assessment is the same: get a clear, honest picture of the home before a small concern becomes a bigger one.

A full walkthrough, not a quick look at one or two rooms.
The visit
ClearStep visits your home and walks through it with you, room by room, looking at the areas above and talking through your daily routine — how you get up in the morning, move through the kitchen, get to the bathroom at night, and everything in between.
We ask questions along the way rather than working from a silent checklist, since the way you actually use your home matters as much as its layout. There's no pressure and no sales pitch during the visit — just a straightforward look at what's working and what isn't.
Afterward
ClearStep provides clear, prioritized recommendations following the assessment, organized by how urgent each one is so you know what to focus on first. You're never told everything is equally important, and you're never pressured to act on all of it at once.
What you do with the recommendations — and when — is entirely up to you. The assessment identifies concerns and possible improvements; it doesn't diagnose medical conditions, guarantee that a fall won't happen, or replace an evaluation by your doctor, physical therapist, or other medical professional.
Not everything is urgent
Findings aren't all treated as required — they're separated by how urgent they actually are.
Issues that pose a clear, near-term risk and are worth addressing as soon as reasonably possible.
Changes that meaningfully reduce risk and are worth planning for in the near future.
Worth keeping in mind, but not urgent — often more relevant as mobility or circumstances change over time.
Not about safety risk specifically — more about comfort and ease in daily life.
Examples
What actually gets recommended depends entirely on your home.

Why it matters
ClearStep Home Safety is led by a Certified Senior Home Safety Specialist (SHSS) through Age Safe America — training focused specifically on how homes affect safety and independence as people age. A senior home safety assessment isn't the same as a general home inspection or a contractor's walkthrough; it's a systematic look at fall risk and daily function, informed by that specific training.

A home safety assessment is a room-by-room walkthrough of your home to identify fall risks and other safety concerns, and to talk through practical ways to address them. It's not a medical exam — it looks at the home and how you move through it, not your health directly.
Ideally, the person living in the home attends, since the assessment is built around how they personally move through the space. Family members or adult children are welcome to join as well, whether in person or by phone.
Most assessments take somewhere between 45 minutes and an hour, though larger homes can take longer. We take the time needed to look at things properly rather than rushing through.
No. The assessment is often most valuable before a fall happens, not after. Many families schedule one simply because they want to understand their risk and address it early, not because something has already gone wrong.
Yes. Many of the assessments we do are scheduled by an adult child on behalf of a parent. The person living in the home is welcome to be part of the visit, or we can walk through the findings with the family afterward.
